Redd Counts

Redd counts are carried out at a number of key locations throughout the catchment. These counts inform NDSFB of spawning success. This has been particularly important in areas that have been previously stocked as part of the Upper Garry Restoration Project where, 2022 saw the first anticipated adult returns.  

In previous years redd counts were carried by staff, wading and simply counting the number of redds observed. This however, does not give a full picture as many could be missed or areas may be inaccessible. Modern technology has come to the fore and the use of drones to photograph large areas of river give a more accurate picture. Recent years have seen the NDSFB hire MadMacWolf media to assist in these surveys with excellent results. Going forward, we now have trained staff to carry out these surveys in house.
